Shortly after this, he constructed the stables at 33 Trevallyn Road (now the garage) to service the property, he then proceeded to lay the bluestone foundation with the help of his employees, in preparation for construction of Werona. To ensure the stability of the building, he allowed the foundations to settle for two years before commencing construction.
Thomas married Mary Barwick and they had seven children, (Margaret, Thomas jnr, Justin, Audrey, Joan and twins, Pauline and Kathleen.) The guest rooms at Werona are named after members of the Stanwix family.
Four of the girls remained unmarried and lived in the house until their deaths.
The last of the Stanwix family was Joan Stanwix who passed away on 25th July 1994. The property was then sold to Phillip and Angela Hawksley at auction in October 1994.
The work undertaken has been honoured by a number of prestigious awards, including the National Trust Restoration Award 1996, The Master Builders Association Excellence Award 1996 and the Period Home Renovator House of the Year 1997.
In August 1998 additional work was commenced to establish Werona as bed and breakfast accommodation.
